Endless blue skies. Luscious grass. And me, stuck in this stupid pen, all by my lonesome. Ah, to be home again, within the confines of my mansion-sized pasture with my best buddies. A saddle strapped to my back, I felt as weight was pulled to one side, but I did my mare duty and stood still for now. The man fell upon me with his hefty butt and I took a couple steps forward, just testing the waters if you will. The reins dangled around my neck, and I felt as if I were steering myself and this…baggage was just along for the ride. Like a pony ride. Taking a couple more steps, I settled into the walk, relaxed, knowing this man was not going to hurt me. All of a sudden, a jerk on the reins. My head shot up, my ears shot back and I flung my head, giving this oaf a warning. More to come if he didn’t behave himself. If I had to tolerate him, he had to deal with me.
Cocking my head, picking up my tail, I felt the, we’ll call it a nudge but it was more like an unsteady kick, and quickly went into a jog, trying to please my rider just this once and not jiggle him. I chomped on the bit, his heavy hand also unsteady with the reins. At least he didn’t bounce all around. That probably was not a pretty picture if he did. Anyway, I believe this ride was for me. Maybe I shouldn’t care about him. All of a sudden surging into a lope, he dragged his right arm back, twisting my neck around and I quickly skirted into a circle, the saddle suddenly sliding and the man with it. I laughed. Had to, really. He thought that he could control me? I needed someone with an equal mindset otherwise things just would never work out. Don’t take it personally bubba. You’re just not my kind of man.
I stood stock still, ears perked, like I was the perfect lesson horse and gave him my oh-so-innocent did I do that look. And I didn’t even break a sweat doing it. After the graceful man exited the pen, I loped around the pen, free of man for the moment as I glided across the floor, my intelligent amber eyes taking in any humans that were about. Settling myself into a jog, my black and white tail slapped against my hindquarters, I brought my attention back to me. Seeing something being hung, I just had to go and investigate. It seemed to be a white square thing. If only I knew the human language.

The little girl fell in love with every horse she saw. Pointing out every single one to her ma who was behind her toting the kids saddle around waiting on her excited daughter to settle down and pick something reasonably priced. I seemed like everything around here was pricey or had spots. What she really wanted was a little horse her daughter could trust and though she preferred that Alice find an arabian it was her birthday and ma had promised she could have a horse as long as the found the right one. So far they had looked at two dissheveled ponies who took their saddles nicely but were only accustomed to being led around and as far as Carolynn was concerned that wasnt broke. Then there had been a horse that was about 17yrs old but it seemed he had known every nasty trick in the book and she steered alice on to the next set of stalls and the ring.
Carolynn was walking alone feeling somewhat forlorn. She really hated to disappoint her daughter if they couldnt find one but they had been looking for months now. Her thoughts drifted back to Dreamer. She really wanted to find at least one mare to buy and breed him to so she could start marketing his foas. Oh the surprise on people's faces when she'd gone to the rodeo on a polished up arabian. No one had expected the stud to be as level headed and calm or even as good as he was at running the pattern and the arena run....
Her thoughts came to an abrupt halt when she nearly crashed right into Alice who was standing with her mouth in a wide opend grin and shining eyes. Glancing up Carolynn had noticed what caught her daughters attention. It was a georgeous paint mare who looked to be at least half arabian. Carolynn knew this was the horse her little girl wanted and she had to hand it to her she had a good eye. The little mare was pretty and Alice reached into her pocket for a horse treat and stuck her little hand out to feed it to the mare. Giggling as shefelt wiskers brush her palm. Carolynn was thrilled with how gentle the mare seemed.
A handler walked over to help out and soon they had the mare saddle and bridled and Carolynn too her for a quick test run first. She leaned forwards and backwards and petted her hind quarters and neck and pushed her through all her gaits. She was somewhat dissappointed that she could tell the mare had a sore mouth. Hopping down she examined the mare and lifted all her feet and tugged a bit on her tail and turning around she helped alice abourd.
Alice was thrilled with the little mare's pretty color and loved her looks . She stopped giggling and listened to her mom call out instructions to her. "Sit straighter" "Dont pick the reins up that high pitch them forward some" "kiss her to a lope" etc. Although she was young she had a good seat and rode the mare well. When her mother called for a whoa she sat way down and just eased pressure on the reins until all for feet came to a stop and then asked for a backup in the same manner.
Carolynn was tingling all over with excitement. The mare was a little spirited but nothing too hard to handle and she was an arabian! Turning to the handler she said "sold" where do we do the paper work?
